What We Believe

At First Baptist Church Capitol Hill, our beliefs are firmly anchored in the Word of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ. We hold fast to the power of the Gospel, the love of Christ, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we live out our faith. From Baptism to the Communion, our foundational beliefs shape how we worship, serve, and grow together as a church family. As we follow Christ, we are dedicated to building, restoring, and revitalizing lives through His grace. ‘For we walk by faith, not by sight’ (2 Corinthians 5:7), trusting God’s Word in all we do.

The Bible
The Bible consists of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments, is the inspired word of God, and is truthful in all that it affirms. It is the final authority for Christian faith and practice. 2Timothy 3:15-17, 2 Peter 1:19-21
Jesus
Jesus Christ is God’s eternal Son. Being both fully God and fully man; He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died as an atoning sacrifice for the sins of all mankind, rose bodily from the dead and ascended into heaven to prepare a place for believers and to intercede on their behalf. Matthew 1:18-23, 1 Corinthians 15:1-8, Acts 1:9-11
The Trinity
There is one true God who eternally exists as three persons: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. Distinct in relationship, the three persons of the Trinity are fully God and are one in essence and purpose. God has revealed Himself to be the infinite personal Creator, who is sovereign over all things. Genesis 1:26, Deuteronomy 6:4, Mark 1:9-11
The Church
The Church is the living Body of Christ on earth and comprised of all true believers in Jesus Christ. He is the head and source of the Church’s life, which exists to glorify God. The Church fulfills its mission by celebrating the glory and goodness of God, cultivating personal growth in Christ, caring about one another in biblical community and communicating the gospel in word and action to the world. Matthew 16:15-19, Ephesians 4:14-16, Acts 2:41-47
Baptism
Baptism is an outward sign of an inward grace, symbolizing the believer’s identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. It is an essential act of obedience that publicly declares one’s faith and commitment to follow Jesus. Through baptism, we acknowledge the cleansing of sin and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 2:38
Communion (The Lord’s Supper)
Communion, also known as the Lord’s Supper, is a sacred act instituted by Jesus Christ to remember His sacrifice and celebrate the new covenant established through His blood. It is a time for believers to reflect on the significance of Christ’s body and blood, to examine their hearts, and to proclaim His death until He returns. Communion fosters unity among believers and deepens our relationship with God. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Luke 22:19-20, John 6:53-54
Relationship with God
We believe that every believer should be in a growing relationship with Jesus by obeying God’s Word, yielding to the Holy Spirit and by being conformed to the image of Christ. See Philippians 3:12-13.
Separation of Church and State
The separation of church and state, which ensures that the government remains neutral in matters of faith and that individuals are free to practice their beliefs without interference. This separation safeguards religious liberty and promotes a society where diverse beliefs can coexist peacefully. We affirm that while the church plays a vital role in guiding moral and ethical values, it should not wield political power, nor should the state impose religious beliefs. Matthew 22:21, Romans 13:1, Galatians 5:1

Congregational Polity

We are committed to a congregational polity that reflects our understanding of Scripture and the nature of the church. Our governing structure is characterized by a pastor-led, congregation-governed model, which we believe aligns with biblical principles.

We hold the Bible as the ultimate authority in all matters of faith and practice. The Scriptures guide our decisions, teachings, and governance, ensuring that both the pastor and congregation remain accountable to God’s Word.

We believe that God has appointed pastors to shepherd, lead, and equip the congregation for ministry. The pastor serves as a spiritual leader, providing vision, teaching, and guidance while modeling Christlike behavior. The pastor’s leadership is exercised in collaboration with the congregation, fostering an environment of mutual respect and encouragement.

We affirm that all members of the church have a voice and a role in decision-making processes. The congregation is called to collectively discern God’s will, exercising their rights and responsibilities through prayer, discussion, and voting on significant matters of church life, including the calling of pastors, budget approvals, and ministry initiatives.

We view church membership as a serious commitment that requires active participation in the life of the church. Members are called to hold one another accountable, encouraging spiritual growth and unity within the body of Christ. The pastor and church leadership are equally accountable to the congregation.

We recognize that our congregation may consist of diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We are committed to fostering unity in Christ through love, respect, and open communication, ensuring that every voice is valued and heard as we seek to fulfill our mission.

Our polity emphasizes the church’s mission to spread the Gospel and serve our community. Together, we strive to fulfill the Great Commission, using our collective gifts and resources for the glory of God.

Our congregational polity reflects our belief in the priesthood of all believers, the importance of spiritual leadership, and the responsibility of every member to participate in the life of the church. We commit ourselves to this model, seeking to honor God in all that we do.

2 Timothy 3:16-17, Ephesians 4:11-12, 1 Peter 5:2-3, Acts 6:3-5, Matthew 18:20, Galatians 6:1-2, Hebrews 10:24-25, 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, Ephesians 4:3, Matthew 28:19-20, 1 Peter 4:10
